For many years, the Great Singapore Sale (GSS) has been a highly anticipated event for shopaholics and Singaporeans trying to get a bang for their buck.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the sale will go on this year — the quintessential retail event will be held virtually for the first time in 26 years.

The is part of the S$45 million SingapoRediscovers campaign by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Enterprise Singapore and Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC).

The campaign aims to give Singaporean lifestyle and tourism a boost after slowed demand this year.

This year, the annual sale is called “eGSS: Shop. Win. Experience”, which plans to help local retailers embrace digitalisation.

800 brands from various industries will take part in the one-month event which will run from 9 September to 10 October.

The GSS is organised by the Singapore Retailers Association (SRA), in collaboration with the Association of Singapore Attractions (ASA), the Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) and the Textiles and Fashion Federation (TaFF).

Prior to the announcement of the virtual GSS, the SRA had announced in May that it was cancelling the sale due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

SRA’s executive director Rose Tong said that the sale was brought back due to “popular demand from retailers”, who felt that “something was missing”.

What To Expect?

The sale will be run on SRA’s GoSpree app, where retailers’ products and offerings will be consolidated.

Technology like virtual and augmented reality will come into play to provide a more life-like experience when viewing products.

Shoppers can expect to be treated to daily deals across different categories such as F&B, hotels, retail and attractions. The platform will also host interactive games where shoppers can win prizes.

There will also be fringe events such as virtual workshops and live-streaming on Facebook with popular influencers.

The GoSpree platform is set to go live on July 28.
