O Jogo says Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs to approach Joao Mario.
The Portuguese international is out of favour under Antonio Conte, and the Serie A outfit are looking for a fee in the region of £13m for the 27-year-old.
Leeds and West Ham are also credited with an interest.
Joao Mario spent last season on-loan in Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow.
