A 20-year-old jobless man was jailed a total of 20 months and fined RM500 and ordered to be caned once on three counts of stealing RM695 from mosques.Datu Sukri Datu Abdul pleaded guilty before Magistrate Afiq Agoes on Tuesday to committing the offences. On the first count, Sukri was sentenced to five months’ jail and fined RM250 or two weeks jail for stealing RM165 from Nur Al-Jannah mosque in Kg Petagas, Penampang.

He was handed another six months’ jail and fined RM250 or two weeks jail on the second count of stealing RM30 at 9.30am on Sept 13 at Nurul Iman mosque in Putatan. On the third count, Sukri was jailed nine months and ordered one stroke of the cane for stealing RM500 from surau Istiqamah at Kg Muhibah Baru in Putatan at 2.21pm on Sept 6. Afiq ordered Sukri to serve the imprisonment sentences concurrently. Inspector Lim Swee Beng, prosecuting told the court that on the first count, the caretaker of the mosque found six donation boxes were missing from the premises. A check with the closed circuit television (CCTV) found Sukri was among three men who sneaked into the premises and committed the offence. Lim said the facts of the case for the second third count also revealed that Sukri was identified as one of the men through the CCTV stealing the monies from a donation box of each premises.

The court heard that Sukri was arrested by police on Sept 14. Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence representing Sukri requested for a lower sentence and applied for the sentence to run from the date of his arrest. Lawrence also informed the court that Sukri was a youth offender and came from a broken family as both his parent had divorced. Inspector Lim applied for an adequate sentences. Each offence under Section 380 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years jail and liability of a fine and also liability of a whipping for a second or subsequent offence on conviction. On another case, a man was penalised for taking syabu.

Jamlin Jamain, who pleaded guilty to committing the offence was fined RM1,800 or seven months jail. He was charged under Section 15(1) of the of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail on conviction.
