Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is open to discussing a new contract.
But he reckons he needs to earn a new contract - instead of being handed one on a plate.
Guardiola has entered the final season of his current £20m-a-year deal and has still to extend his time at the Etihad.
He said: "I would love to stay longer here. It is a place I love to be, but I have to deserve one.
"This club achieved standards in the last decade, but we have to maintain that and I have to deserve it. I am going to see if I deserve it this season in terms of how the club goes forward and improves.
"They didn't push me from day one to today (to sign a new contract) . They allow me to do my job the best I can and with all my staff and the players - and this is going to continue to happen.
"They didn't tell me 'you have to do this, or you have to do that, or you have to win this or you have to win that'. They told me to play.
In my feelings, I know the standards of the club and if I don't achieve the standards, I probably don't deserve one. I have to win to extend my contract."
Guardiola, whose side kick-off their Premier League campaign at Wolves tonight, claims he hasn't had time to hold contract talks with chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak.
But he insists he remains as motivated as ever to be successful and he added: "We have a game every three days, so we don't have much time to think about it.
"I try to see Txiki (Begiristain) and Ferran (Soriano) and I speak every week with Khaldoon. When it is going to happen, it is going to happen."
