Kota Kinabalu: Beaufort is on the brink of becoming a Covid-19 red zone when its six new cases today pushed its active cases total to 34 while Ranau, which recorded no new cases, is also on course to become one with its current total of 35. Both districts are just a few cases shy of reaching 40 active cases and recategorising as red zones. Beaufort was among seven yellow zones (districts with one to 39 active cases) that received new patients with the others being Kota Marudu (6), Tambunan (5), Sipitang (3), Keningau (2), Tenom (1) and Pitas (1).

Apart from Ranau, two other yellow zones -- Kuala Penyu and Kinabatangan -- saw no new cases while Tongod, Nabawan and Telupid remained as green zones or districts without active cases. All red zones in Sabah saw double-digit increases today with Kota Kinabalu topping the list with 58 cases, followed by Semporna (33), Tawau (31) and Lahad Datu (29). The other red zones were Sandakan (21 new cases), Penampang (19), Kudat (18), Papar (16), Kota Belud (16), Tuaran (15), Kunak (13) and Putatan (11). Sabah remained the state with the most Covid-19 cases at 51.6 percent as a result of wide field testing and more test results received, the Ministry of Health said.

Sabah recorded 304 new cases, most of which were close contacts at 165, followed by 101 other screening cases, 25 in existing clusters and 13 in a new cluster called Olive spread over Ulu Langat in Selangor, as well as Penampang and Kota Marudu. Also of note today was Malaysia’s oldest fatality, a 100-year-old woman who died at Sandakan hospital, part of the nation’s three latest fatalities, all in Sabah, which also recorded the country’s youngest fatal case, a year-old girl, who died on Oct 6. Oct 6 remained the nation’s worst day in terms of caseload at 691 cases, but Sabah’s lowest point was Oct 11 when it registered its highest daily tally at 488 cases. In terms of deaths, the nation’s daily record is six, all in Sabah, on Oct 9. On a positive note, Malaysians were relieved today at the news that a record 409 patients, including 111 in Sabah, were discharged. Meanwhile, neighbouring Labuan, which saw six new cases today, will be placed under the Conditional Movement Control Order from Oct 17 to 30. The federal territory island also had a new cluster called Saguking which received two new cases and also saw a new case in its existing Bah Bundle cluster.
