Newcastle United were in the market for Chelsea duo Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley.
The two attacking midfielders were on the radar of the Magpies and manager Steve Bruce.
But according to theChronicle Live, the club eventually decided against pursuing either transfer.
The reason given is the high loan fees Chelsea wanted, along with the players' wages.
Both would have commanded £100,000 a week-plus, which is out of the reach of a club like Newcastle.
Part of the issue was the club's inability to lose players who are no longer wanted, including Achraf Lazaar, Henri Saivet, Christian Atsu and Rolando Aarons.
