Former Holland striker Rene van der Gijp was baffled by the substitutions last night in Liverpool's 1-0 Champions League win at Ajax.

In the second-half, Ajax coach Erik ten Hag took David Neres off fifteen minutes before the end, while his colleague from Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp, withdrew Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané and Roberto Firmino to completely change his attack.

Van der Gijp stated: “I didn't take the trainer course, but does it say that you always have to change your best people?

"Klopp takes out his three attackers and our friend Ten Hag takes out Neres and Klaassen. Those were by far the best players today. What does that mean?

"You (Ajax) no longer have any depth in your game and you just stop playing..."
