PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin said declaring a state emergency is the only way to stop any elections in the country, following the announcement of the Batu Sapi by-election this Dec 5 and the possibility of a Sarawak state election in the near future.

During a special address updating the Covid-19 situation in the country, he said he feared that elections in Sarawak might cause a fresh outbreak of Covid-19 cases there.

However, he said there was nothing to stop elections. He said the Federal Constitution said that elections must be held within 60 days of any announcement of a vacated seat.

His speech comes a week after his attempt to declare a partial state of emergency was rejected by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
