Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce lamented the "soft" goals they gave away for their 2-0 defeat on Saturday.

Timo Werner and Tammy Abraham struck the goals for the visitors.

Bruce said, "We didn't do enough in the first half and got off to an awful start. And against the big boys the one thing you can't do is gift them an opener, it'd hard enough.

"Second half I thought we were much better, we had a few opportunities and in the big key moments you have to take one of them.

"So in the second half there was a lot of pleasing points, but it was a very difficult afternoon against an excellent Chelsea team.

"It's a soft goal we've given away and the second is a bit soft too. We have to be a lot more cunning and create a foul there.

"It's always difficult against a top, top team, they are as good a side as you see in Europe at the minute. But we have to have a bit more belief in what we do, and we will."

On the continued absence of fans, he added: "They stayed with us in the game last year and the crowd was unbelievable in their attitude towards the team. All the big clubs miss the atmosphere. Of course we would like them back but so would everyone else too."
