Kota Kinabalu: A 35-year-old mechanic was sentenced to six months jail on Wednesday for assaulting his sister, who was trying to prevent him from hitting their mother.Suffi Mohamad pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to causing hurt to one Nurafikah Mohamad, 26, at 8.40pm on Nov 10 in a house at Taman Sempelang in Sembulan. Inspector Suzie @ Stephanie Kupit, prosecuting, told the court that prior to the incident, a quarrel ensued between Suffi and their mother, who refused to hand over the house’s grant as demanded by Suffi.

Nurafikah, who was in her bedroom rushed out upon hearing the quarrel and saw Suffi was about to hit their mother with his hand but Nurafikah managed to fend off the his attack with her hand. Suffi then hit Nurafikah by punching her left eye and kicking her right ribs four times. Nurafikah, who suffered injuries and pain due to the attack, then lodged a police report against Suffi at 12.36am on Nov 11, the court heard. Duty counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence, representing Suffi, applied for a lenient sentence on the grounds that he was a divorcee with three children and remorseful with his action. Lim also said that Suffi could not afford to pay the fine and requested for a lower jail term as he had pleaded guilty to the charge at the first instance.

The prosecution applied for an adequate sentence. Suffi had committed an offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to a year or fine of up to RM2,000 or both on conviction. In another case, a 33-year-old man was charged with having stolen items. Salesman Ng Vui Siong pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Jessica Ombou Kakayun to having a unit of stolen air conditioner and a unit of stolen air conditioner blower belonging to one Duncan Danny Wong at 1pm on Nov 12 in a house at Taman Bersatu in Putatan. The prosecution applied for a case management date and proposed bail at RM3,000. Duty counsel Lim, representing Ng, applied for a lower bail amount on the grounds that Ng’s salary as a salesman was not sufficient during the current CMCO as Ng, who is married with two children, is also taking care of his mother. The court set Dec 17 for case management and released Ng on a bail of RM2,000 in two sureties. Inspector Albert Basiri prosecuted.
