Kuala Lumpur: The government has been urged to find more effective solutions to the problem of illegal immigrants in Sabah, which among others, contributed to the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.Expressing concern over the threats posed by the deadly virus, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun (Bersatu-Beaufort) (pic) said there were too many illegals in the country, particularly in Sabah due to the long stretches of the country’s borders which were frequently trespassed by these immigrants. “The third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sabah is clear evidence of the dangers posed by these illegal immigrants.

The government must find more effective solutions to this problem,” she said during the debate on the 2021 Supply Bill in the Dewan Rakyat Tuesday. Commending the government’s effort through ‘Op Benteng’ involving the country’s security forces and enforcement agencies, Azizah said more such operations should be conducted in other locations to ensure greater success in preventing illegals from entering the country.

On Monday, 972 new positive cases of Covid-19 were reported of which 370 were recorded in Sabah. Azizah also noted that the Covid-19 pandemic had shown that comprehensive health service facilities were vital and should be provided adequately to the people. In that regard, she said the government needed to set up health facilities in areas that had yet to have them as soon as possible while providing sufficient and the latest health equipment for people in both the urban and rural areas.
