Record 12 deaths, 678 new cases in Sabah, spike in KK detention centre cluster

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah saw record 12 Covid-19 deaths and 678 cases on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said.

Eight of the deaths, including a 14-year-old non-citizen boy, were registered in Kota Kinabalu, while two in Sandakan and one each in Tawau and Kudat.

A total of 290 of Sabah’s new cases were found in existing clusters, 221 close contacts, one severe acute respiratory infection or Sari case and 166 other screening cases.

A whopping 229 new cases were registered in the Kota Kinabalu Temporary Detention Centre cluster called Rumah Merah, the most among Malaysia’s clusters today. The cluster now had 404 total cases with 1,431 individuals screened so far.

A total of 44 new cases were recorded in the Kepayan Prison cluster, which had been seeing a lull in new cases lately until today’s spike, and two new cases were registered in the Tawau Temporary Detention Centre, Sabah’s latest area placed under total lockdown yesterday.

Kota Kinabalu saw a new daily high of 341 cases, the most among Sabah’s districts.

Seven new cases were found today among returnees from Sabah. The total of cases with Sabah travel history since Sept 20 is 478 cases.
