Former Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has announced his retirement.

The 37-year-old midfielder left his last team, Qatar's Al Sadd, in June and today he has confirmed he's hung up the boots.

Gabi played 417 games for the Rojiblanca, won six titles and was captain for six seasons. He left the club in 2018 in search of a final challenge in Qatar, where Xavi Hernández is head coach.

He posted to social media today:

"When I started playing football I never imagined that my dreams would come true. Today has come the day to put an end to my career as a footballer.

"I wanted to thank all the people who have been part of this journey, from all my teammates, coaches, workers from all teams and, of course, my family and friends, because they have never let me collapse in moments of difficulty.

"Also to all that support that has demanded and also encouraged me to be better, not only on the field, but also outside of it.

"Finally, to you, FOOTBALL, for giving me the opportunity to be eternal in the memory of many people (without a doubt the greatest heritage I have acquired).

"Now I have to take care of mine. Thank you all!"
