Kota Kinabalu: Security forces seized over 54kg of syabu valued at more than RM2.4 million during a routine patrol scouring the waters of Sabah’s east coast Tawau district for undocumented migrants on Monday. Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) personnel comprising members of the marine police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency and navy spotted a boat heading towards Indonesia from Tawau at 9.20pm. Esscom commander Ahmad Fuad Othman said as they gave chase, the vessel turned back towards Kuala Sungai Tawau Lama.

The security forces alerted their men who were conducting ground patrols who rushed to Kuala Sungai Tawau Lama. “When they reached the place, they saw two men from the boat fleeing and pursued them on foot, but they managed to slip away in the dark,” he told reporters at a press conference today.

Following a check, the raiding team found three boxes of different sizes in the boat. Ahmad said besides the syabu, which were stored in multiple Chinese tea packets, his men also seized over 74gm of ecstasy pills. He said this was the biggest drug bust made by Esscom since launching the anti-illegal immigrant operation at the Eastern Sabah Security Zone since March.
