Burnley winger Dwight McNeil has come to the defense of his teammate James Tarkowski.

The experienced centre-back stated in a recent interview that he was not going to renew his contract at the club.

Tarkowski wanted a move to West Ham in the summer, but was denied.

McNeil, who is 20 and recently signed a long term deal himself, can understand Tarkowski's reasons for not wanting to do the same.

"It is a difficult one," McNeil said, when asked about Tarkowski's comments by reporters.

"I see Tarky every day and train with him every day and I know how good he is as a player and how good he is as a person, off the pitch as well as on the pitch. He is a top lad, a quality lad.

"I can see where he is coming from a bit but I still do believe that he can get capped and called up again being with us (Burnley).

"It is difficult with the situation he has been in as well, not getting picked the past few times.

"He is right to have his say on it, his own opinion.

"But I still believe that him being with us, he can still get a call up for the senior team because he is a great player and a great man off the pitch as well."
