Kota Kinabalu: The health ministry has reported 1,096 Covid-19 cases and three deaths in the past 24 hours. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,104 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 41,597. In a statement, he said the 1,096 new cases brought the total number of cases in the country to 54,775.

The three deaths bring the toll to 335, or 0.61% of total infections. Noor Hisham said 106 cases are being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with 46 patients requiring breathing ventilators. The number of active cases stands at 12,843. Selangor reported the highest number of cases, with 603 infections (55%), followed by Sabah with 311 infections (28.4%).

Noor Hisham said Selangor remained the state with the highest number of Covid-19 cases due to the Teratai Cluster which had shown an increase of 502 cases. Sabah recorded the second highest number due to the increase in medical swabs of close contacts, with 139 cases (44.7%) detected. Out of the total cases reported today, 72 cases (6.6%) were from temporary detention centres and a prison involving the Rumah Merah cluster (4), Tempok Cluster (42), Bakti Cluster (16), Sandakan Prison cluster (4), Seberang Perai cluster (2), remand prison cluster (2), Kepayan prison cluster (1) and Matambai cluster (1). All three deaths were from Sabah. The first victim was a 68-year-old man with a history of high blood pressure and stroke. He was admitted to the Tawau Hospital. The second death involved a 90-year-old man who had suffered a stroke previously. He was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The third victim was an 80-year-old woman who had a stroke. She was a patient at the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan.
