Liverpool fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold says the thrashing by Aston Villa shook the defending champions.

The 7-2 defeat was the first time the Merseyside club had shipped seven in the top flight and the first time in any competition since 1963.

"As players you understand something wasn't right if you concede seven goals in one game," Alexander-Arnold said, reflecting on the game.

"The main thing was to learn from it. The international break helped us clear our minds. The derby was a decent result and we kicked on from there.

"There was a meeting, but we always have one. It was more about self-reflection in that period and knowing that can't happen, to concede seven goals was unacceptable. It humbled us as a team.

"It let us know we don't just win because we are Liverpool."
