Roberto Firmino's 90th minute header helped Liverpool edge Tottenham in an entertaining contest at Anfield on Wednesday.

Both sides entered the match equal on points at the top of the Premier League table.

Spurs had not won at Anfield since 2011 and it looked like that record would continue when Mohamed Salah scored a fortunate goal after 26 minutes.

Liverpool were utterly dominant to start the game and Salah's deflected looping strike gave them a deserved lead.

But as they have done so often this season, Spurs caught the Reds napping with a swift counter-attack which ended in a goal by no other than Son Heung-min.

The game was evenly poised when the second-half restarted, and although Liverpool continued to dominate possession, it was Tottenham who had the best chances.

A route-one pass from Hugo Lloris was headed on by Harry Kane and the same again by Son, who put Steven Bergwijn clear on goal, only for the Dutchman to hit one-on-one shot off the post.

Kane was then guilty of missing a sitter when he failed to convert a free header from just outside the six-yard box.

It looked as though Tottenham would walk away with a valuable point and save Kane a sleepless night.

However, Jurgen Klopp's side showed why his team are the reigning champions by scoring yet another late goal through Firmino.

It was a match Jose Mourinho will be replaying in his mind after Spurs were unlucky not to go ahead despite being entrenched in their own half for most of the game.

Liverpool now move three points clear at the top heading into the hectic Christmas period.

Speaking after the game, Mourinho was annoyed with his side's missed chances.

The Portuguese told Amazon: "So close to winning, yeah, not so close of a draw - so close of winning, but we missed the chances, we had the chances, had the game under control, a draw would be a bad result - so you can imagine how we feel with a defeat.

"Very good performance, of course some mistakes, some things to improve, a very unfair result. My team told me I am right when I say from the beginning of the season we go to every match to win. We played against the champions in their stadium and we had the best chances to win.
