Kota Kinabalu: A 55-year-old man who threatened to slash and kill his wife with a machete after the wife refused to give him money to buy syabu, was jailed 10 months.Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie handed the sentence to Mohd Dani Assadin who pleaded guilty to the charge against him on Tuesday. Mohd Dani had threatened his 53-year-old wife at 9.24pm on Nov 24 this year at a house in Kg Sembulan, here.

The offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years, or fine, or both, on conviction. During mitigation, counsel Lawrence Lim from the National Legal Aid Foundation who represented Mohd Dani, asked for leniency saying that his client was unemployed and has eight children. Lim informed the court that Mohd Dani’s was the sole breadwinner of his family.

However, Prosecuting Officer, Inspector Suzie Kupit urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence. The court heard that on the said day Mohd Dani had threatened to slash and kill his wife with the machete. The incident happened because the wife refused to give money to Mohd Dani as he wanted to buy syabu.
