West Ham boss David Moyes has played down the prospect of signing a new striker in January.

Michail Antonio missed a seventh game of the season with a hamstring injury as the Hammers slipped to a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea on Monday and Moyes afterwards admitted he was short of options up front.

But the Scot said the club was unlikely to enter the transfer market next month unless they are hit with more injuries.

“Micky [Antonio] is back on the grass training – we'll get him back as quick as we can, we can't say exactly when that's going to be but we'll monitor him daily, and he's coming on well, so hopefully not too long," Moyes said ahead of Sunday's visit of Brighton.

"We haven't really got any big intentions of making signings but if we need it the owners have said they'll help if we require it. That's to do with injuries and anything else that crops up. If we'll need it, we'll try to go and get it but January is not always a great market.

"There's a good chance we would [move for a striker] because we've got less options in that position but it wouldn't necessarily be there.

“We're continuing to try to build a good squad, but more importantly a good team. Where we're weaker we'd probably look to try to get someone in but not always can you get players you want and not always are the players available."
