Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp admits Joel Matip has long been carrying injury problems this season.

The Reds are waiting to ascertain the extent of Matip's latest setback after the centre-back limped out of Sunday's 1-1 Premier League draw at home to West Bromwich Albion with a suspected adductor problem.

Matip has missed almost half of Liverpool's top-flight campaign this season due to a series of complaints, the most recent of which was a back problem that forced him off at Fulham during half-time and sidelined him for the win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Klopp said: "It's like a 'wandering' injury.

"He had a problem with his ankle, but could play on. He then got a back problem.

"Everybody knows he was limping from time to time and then he got a back problem (because of it).

"We worked on that, on both (injuries), and now he has an adductor (injury)."

Matip is a major doubt for Liverpool's trip to Newcastle United on Wednesday, with Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips competing for a potential role alongside Fabinho at centre-back.

And speaking to liverpoolfc.com, Klopp added: "We will see. I hope it's not too serious but of course, three days until Newcastle is close.

"He was pretty good (against West Brom) and it would have been nice if he could play on."
