Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta defended Alex Runarsson after his gaffe in their Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City.

City manager Pep Guardiola later said the error from Runarsson turned the game in their favour, which City eventually won 4-1.

Arteta replied: "I don't know if he was trying to be kind but those actions are reality but that reality is the difference between the two teams in certain moments, but not for the whole match. But still, you look at the game and that's the story of the game in the end.

"We win and lose together and Alex has played other games. We decided to play him tonight for many reasons and that responsibility is for all of us."

Asked if he regrets letting Emi Martinez leave for Aston Villa, Arteta was adamant.

He added: "There's no point having any regrets. There's different reasons why we had to do that transaction. We did it and it's a part of the past. He had a really good few months last season and he really helped us and obviously when our goalkeeper makes an error, these things are going to come up."
