Aston Villa boss Dean Smith was delighted with their 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Anwar El Ghazi cancelled out Olivier Giroud's opener for Chelsea.

Smith remarked afterwards, "It's tough turning it around but I trust the players. I asked every one of them if they were ready to go again and they looked me in the eye and said they were.

"It's a big thing to have that trust and they have gone and proved that today.

"We've had to battle at times today, there were spells of pressure from both teams but it is great to get a point here."

He continued: "We all know how tough it is in the Premier League. When we got promoted we had to bring in 13 new players and it takes time for them to bed in straight away.

"We managed to retain our status the following season, then you have to be choosy who you pick and we could only bring in five players.

"But you have to be here three or four seasons to have the depth a lot of clubs have, the longer you're in it the more depth you can have."

Smith also had praise for the outstanding McGinn on the night.

He added: "He is a wonderful character in the dressing room, he had a serious injury last year - the fractured ankle at Southampton in December - and didn't come back until June. In Project Restart he was playing catch up and now he is back to his best.

"He's an old fashioned midfielder, he's box to box, he sticks his backside in, loves a tackle and on top of that he is a wonderful character."
