Covid-19: No Sabah deaths but one in Penang, 1,153 cases new cases nationwide

PUTRAJAYA: The health ministry has reported 1,153 Covid-19 cases and one death in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 998 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 76,242.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the 1,153 cases bring the total number of infections in the country to 91,969.

There are 15,294 active cases with 112 patients being treated in the intensive care unit and 56 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the one new death brings the toll to 433.

The deceased was a 76-year-old Malaysian woman who passed away at Penang Hospital. She had been suffering from high blood pressure and dyslipidemia (abnormal amount of lipids).

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases today, with 401 infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur with 281 and Sabah with 199.

Perak reported 82 cases while Johor had 75. Meanwhile, Penang reported 30 infections, followed by Labuan (19), Negeri Sembilan (18), Pahang (16), Kedah (13), Kelantan (10), Putrajaya (4), Melaka (3) and Sarawak (2).

A total of 176 cases today were related to prison and immigration depot clusters, namely the Jalan Harapan Prison cluster and Tembok cluster.

There were only two imported cases today.

Lastly, the Jalan Timah cluster involves the Johor Bahru and Kulai districts, with the index case testing positive on Dec 18 in a screening after exhibiting symptoms. A total of 238 people have been screened, with 26 found positive.

Meanwhile, three clusters officially ended today, namely the Softwood LD cluster in Sabah, Besi Demak cluster in Sarawak and Rajawali cluster in Penang.

This brings total active clusters to 199 out of the 440 cumulative number of clusters reported. Of these, 41 reported new infections today.

The clusters that reported the highest number of new cases are the Jalan Stadium construction site (167 cases), Jalan Harapan prison (96) and Tembok clusters (80).
