Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves says they should move for Ralf Rangnick as their first sporting director.
United don't have anyone acting as a bridge between executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with a series of poor decisions in the transfer market undermining their recent efforts.
Hargreaves says a move for Rangnick would make sense and help the club nurture some of the talents they currently see playing for their rivals both at home and abroad.
“I don't think you could get a better one," Hargreaves told BT Sport.
"The recruitment, the detail, everything. He's almost perfect for the job. He's got experience, he's been in big jobs.
"He was the architect behind that RB Leipzig project, getting to a Champions League semi-finals with players that wouldn't get in any of the top teams.
"Going and getting Julian Nagelsmann to take them to the next level. His attention to detail is second to none. He'd be perfect for Manchester United."
