LABUAN: The Labuan Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the government’s plan to proceed with the long-awaited Labuan-Menumbok bridge despite the challenges posed by Covid-19 and hoped it will be successful this time after several U-turns on the bridge decision over the years.

Its Chairman Datuk Dahlif Singh said the bridge is good for the future of Labuan and would attract investments in commercial and residential properties, create employment and help boost the flagging local economy.

However, he said from what the Chamber learned, there were also fears by some quarters that it may result in greater exodus of people from Labuan than an influx to the island.

This is due to attempts by the previous Barisan Nasional administration to impose restrictions on liquor purchase and lately the new Perikatan Nasional Government to do away duty-free cigarettes from January to counter smuggling.
