Kota Kinabalu: A 45-year-old man was charged with committing sexual abuse against his eight-year-old daughter.

The man pleaded not guilty before High Court Deputy Registrar Dana Arabi Wazani who sat as a Sessions Court Judge, to the charge against him on Friday.

The man is accused of committing the offence against the minor by inserting his finger and private part into the girl’s private part between March and June this year at a rented room in Inanam, here.

The offence under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, provides for a jail term of up to 20 years’ jail and whipping, on conviction.

The court set Jan 7 next year for case management and ordered the man to be remanded further pending the date.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Megat Mahathir Megat Tharih Afendi objected to bail the man on the grounds that the alleged victim is her daughter and that there was a high possibility he would tampering with the girl and other witnesses.

Megat also submitted that the man also has no permanent job.

However, Counsel Lawrence Lim who represented the man asked for a bail to be granted saying that his wife is disabled and suffering from a stroke.

Lim informed the court that prior to the man’s arrest, he worked as a lorry driver.

The court also heard that the man was also charged in Magistrate’s Court with committing a drug-related offence and the court released him on a bail.
