BigPay has alerted its customers of two new methods that are being used by scammers to trick them into disclosing their one-time passwords (OTPs), consequently allowing these parties to make off with their money.
According to BigPay, scammers are now attempting to deceive customers by telling them that BigPay is changing its card from blue to red, or offering a premium BigPay card. As such, customers are being convinced to provide their personal details and OTP for “verification purposes”. The OTP is a widely used security feature utilised by banks and payment service providers to confirm your identity as an account owner.
“We would like to clarify that these are absolutely not true – the BigPay card remains solely the same striking blue, and there are no existing premium BigPay cards available to anyone,” BigPay said in its email alert sent to its customers.
These two schemes are the latest additions to a growing list of ongoing BigPay scams, which include luring customers in via promises of cashbacks, lucky prizes, or rewards. BigPay went on to remind its customers to always be alert and stay vigilant of any questionable or too-good-to-be-true messages.
On top of that, BigPay also linked the email notice to its blog post on BigPay’s security best practices, clarifying that “no BigPay employee will ever ask for your OTP or PIN, under any circumstances.” The post further explained some of the built-in security features that BigPay employs to keep its customers’ money safe, such as multiple authentication levels and the ability to freeze your BigPay card when you come across suspicious transactions.
