Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysia Maritime Silk Route Research Society (MMSRRS) organised a virtual Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) Symposium last Wednesday Dec 9 to highlight the importance of biosafety and biosecurity.

According to MMSRRS president Prof Datuk Dr Wilson Yong Tung Yung, the online symposium among others, also focused on recent development and the way forward to prevent, control and manage pandemics like Covid-19 in a more concerted way by all the stakeholders in the Asean region.

Sabah doctor Dr Joseph Lee Han Kyun in his presentation among many other issues informed the public that events suggesting the release of a bioweapon include:

Multiple people ill at the same time (epidemic)
  • Previously healthy persons affected
  • High morbidity and mortality among affected individuals
  • Identification of diseases and pathogens unusual to a particular region
  • Recent terrorist claims or activity
