Ten penalised for drug-related offences

Kota Kinabalu: Ten people were penalised by the Magistrate’s Court here Monday for committing drug-related offences.

Eight of them Hassan Masilin, Samsul Katoh, Rezal Teeh, Mohd Sayrul, Arsam Adam, Maruli Ardin, Idris Rajak, Matias Talar, aged between 33 and 46, pleaded guilty to taking syabu and amphetamine.

The prosecution tendered the chemist’s reports which stated that the eight’s respective urine samples were positive for the said drugs.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie sentenced the eight to six months in jail.

Samsul, Sayrul, Arsam and Matias were also ordered to be referred to the Immigration Department, thereafter.

Earlier, the eight requested a lenient sentence.

Rezal, Maruli, and Idris were represented by Duty Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence while the rest were not represented.

Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.

Meanwhile, the other two people were jailed seven months each for having syabu.

Juliena Hairi, 26, admitted to having 0.11gm of syabu on June 13 in Inanam.

Wirson Abd Patah, 44, pleaded guilty to having 0.18gm of syabu on July 20 also in Inanam.

Duty Counsel Lim, representing Juliena and Wirson, applied for a lenient sentence for them.

The court ordered their sentence to run from the date of their arrest.

Juliena and Wirson were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years’ jail or both, on conviction.
