Everton defender Niels Nkounkou has spoken of his decision to leave Olympique Marseille this summer.

Nkounkou admits he departed convinced he'd have a clearer path to the first team at Goodison Park.

He explained to L'Equipe: "I preferred to leave because there were a lot of players who could evolve at the left-back position. Last season there was only Amavi, but Villas-Boas tried Sakai on the left, sometimes even Sarr, and Saîf Khaoui also made a few appearances.

"I really felt like it was going to be complicated for me. I needed playing time and Everton could give it to me. I preferred to take the risk of leaving. I did not have a discussion with the coach.

"The departure of Andoni Zubizarreta did not help matters. I got along well with him and from that moment I chose to leave."
