TAWAU: The Lotus Buddhism Studies Mission Tawau which is situated at Jalan Kuhara here will distribute 2,000 sets of “eight-treasure” porridge (Laba congee) to the people at Sin Onn market, here, this Sunday, (Jan 17) morning. The organising committee will start to cook the Laba congee at 7 pm on Saturday and expect it to be ready before dawn. They would load the congee into containers at 4am before dispatching to the people. Last year, they distributed 1,500 sets of Laba congee. Laba congee is a Chinese ceremonial congee dish eaten on the eighth day of the twelfth month the Chinese calendar. The festival originated in ancient times as a celebration of the winter harvest, welcoming the coming spring and Chinese New Year.

It was also combined with a Buddhist holiday commemorating the day of the Buddha’s enlightenment.
