Aston Villa matchwinner Ross Barkley was delighted with victory at Southampton.
Barkley scored the only goal of the game at St Mary's.
He later said, "We definitely needed that result. We put a shift in. [It was a] disappointing result in the week, we knew what we needed to do.
"They're a great side, they put the pressure on you at the end. Defensively we were solid, we were much improved."
On the goal, he continued: "Jack [Grealish] has got the quality to deliver, arriving in the box you'll get the goals. It was a great ball, I just guided it in."
"It was a relief, we did deserve it. [VAR decisions] go either way. Thankfully it went our way this time.
"It's a great platform, we can still improve. We've got loads more games, we're focusing on the positives."
