PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has recorded 2,027 Covid-19 cases and eight deaths in the past 24 hours. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,221 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 99,449. In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 122,845.

There are 22,887 active cases with 123 patients receiving intensive care, of which 52 require respiratory assistance. Meanwhile, the eight deaths raises the toll to 509. The deaths involve seven Malaysians and one foreigner. They were aged between 52 to 78, with four of them suffering from pre-existing medical conditions. Of the new infections today, 16 were imported cases while the remaining 2,011 were local transmissions. Selangor continued to record the highest number of cases with 509, while other areas that reported triple-digit infections were Johor (428), Sabah (383) and Kuala Lumpur (313). They were followed by Negeri Sembilan (98), Penang (60), Kedah (47), Kelantan (42), Labuan (37), Perak (25), Pahang (25), Melaka (21), Sarawak (13), Terengganu (13) and Putrajaya (13). No cases were reported in Perlis. These new infections came from new and existing clusters as well as close contact tracing and other Covid-19 screenings. Prison and detention centre clusters had 111 cases today, most of which came from the Jalan Harapan prison and Tembok Gajah clusters, with 64 and 43 cases, respectively.

In a statement, he said they are the Jalan Playar, Sri Suria, Bukit Semenyih construction site and Bukit Angkat clusters in Selangor; Parit Jamil cluster in Johor; Tombovo cluster in Sabah; Jalan Desa construction site and Jalan Raja clusters in Kuala Lumpur; Langit Selatan cluster in Pahang; Bah Sayap cluster in Sarawak; and the Mengkuang cluster in Terengganu. The Jalan Playar cluster in Petaling, Selangor, was detected after targeted screening at a factory today. A total of 180 people were screened, 68 of whom tested positive for Covid-19. Similarly, cases in the Sri Suria cluster in Petaling also tested positive through targeted screening at a factory earlier today. Of the 258 individuals screened, 16 were found positive. The Bukit Semenyih construction site cluster, located in Hulu Langat, Selangor, was identified after a workplace screening on Jan 3. Some 370 people were screened and 17 tested positive. The Bukit Angkat cluster, also in Hulu Langat, was detected through targeted screening at a company on Jan 1. A total of 83 people were screened, with 25 testing positive. Meanwhile, the Parit Jamil cluster in Muar, Johor, began when the index case was identified on Dec 29 after exhibiting symptoms. Some 612 people have been screened so far, 62 of whom were found to be positive. The Tombovo cluster was detected in Putatan, Sabah, after an individual tested positive on Jan 3. As of today, 97 have been screened, with 18 testing positive. The Jalan Desa construction site cluster in Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur, began after a workplace screening earlier today. Of the 800 screened so far, 116 tested positive. The Jalan Raja cluster involves the Lembah Pantai, Cheras, Titiwangsa and Kepong districts in Kuala Lumpur, with the first case reported on Dec 19 after a screening at a shopping mall. A total of 125 individuals have been screened, with 25 testing positive. The index case for the Langit Selatan cluster in Kuantan, Pahang, tested positive after exhibiting symptoms on Dec 31. As of today, 43 people have been screened and nine have tested positive. The Bah Sayap cluster was detected in Miri, Sarawak, after the index case was found positive on Dec 31. Of the 48 people screened, five tested positive. The Mengkuang cluster involves the Marang and Kuala Nerus districts in Terengganu, with the index case testing positive on Jan 1 after exhibiting symptoms. Some 150 individuals have been screened and 10 found positive. Noor Hisham said there were now 242 active clusters out of the 548 reported. The Jalan Perindustrian cluster reported the highest number of cases today, with 200 infections. This was followed by the Jalan Desa construction site cluster with 116 and Beringin cluster with 65.
