Kota Kinabalu: Former Sepanggar Umno Division Chief, Datuk Jumat Idris, has been appointed as assistant secretary of Sabah Umno.

Sabah Umno Chief, Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, handed the appointment letter to him in a brief ceremony, Friday, which was also witnessed by Sabah Umno Secretary, Datuk Jafry Arifin, Information Chief, Datuk Raime Unggi, and Executive Secretary, Awang Aslee Lakat.

Jumat, the former Sepanggar MP, succeeded Awang Aslee who has been appointed to his current position following the resignation of Datuk Kadzim M Yahya, who had been appointed Speaker of  the State Legislative Assembly in October last year.

Bung, who is also Deputy Chief Minister cum Works Minister, said Jumat’s appointment will help smoothen the tasks shouldered by Jafry who is also busy with his duty as the Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister.

“I am confident Jumat is capable based on his vast experiences while serving in the party since its establishment in Sabah,” said Bung.

Jumat, who is also the Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Darau state seat in the 14th State Election in September last year, thanked Bung and the State Umno leadership for the trust given to him and assured he will do his best to shoulder the great responsibility placed on his shoulder.
