PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 2,451 Covid-19 cases and five deaths in the past 24 hours. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 1,401 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 106,832. In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 133,559.

There are 26,185 active cases with 177 patients being treated in intensive care and 82 requiring respiratory assistance. Meanwhile, the five deaths brings the number of fatalities to 542. All five who died were Malaysian men, aged between 60 and 87. They all had other medical conditions. Three were from Johor while the other two were from Putrajaya and Selangor. On the new infections, only five were imported while 2,446 were local infections, which involved 1,858 Malaysians and 588 foreigners. Selangor notched the highest number of cases again with 564 infections, followed by Sabah and Negeri Sembilan, with 409 and 351 infections respectively. Johor reported 302 cases, followed by Penang (273), Kuala Lumpur (198), Kedah (65), Kelantan (61), Sarawak (55), Melaka (50), Perak (42), Pahang (36), Putrajaya (17), Terengganu (16), Perlis (eight), and Labuan (four).

Of the new cases, 327 were from clusters at detention centres, immigration depots and prisons. The health ministry reported five new clusters today, affecting Johor, Penang, Melaka, Sarawak and Terengganu. Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the clusters are the Mikro cluster in Johor, the Symphony Magazine cluster in Penang, the Pasai cluster in Sarawak, the Teknologi Kesidang cluster in Melaka and the Palut cluster in Terengganu. The Mikro cluster involves cases in the Johor Bahru, Kulai, Pontian, and Kota Tinggi districts in Johor. The cases in this cluster were detected on Dec 21 after the screening of a factory’s workers. A total of 588 people have been screened with 97 testing positive. The Symphony Magazine cluster involves the North-East and North Seberang Perai districts in Penang and first involved a person screened after exhibiting symptoms. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 1. A total of 116 people have been screened with 44 testing positive. The Pasai cluster involves the districts of Sibu and Mukah in Sarawak and first involved a person who was screened while travelling across the state. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 7. A total of 73 people have been screened with 38 testing positive. The Teknologi Kesidang cluster involves the Melaka Tengah district in Melaka and first involved a person screened after exhibiting symptoms. The patient was found to be positive on Dec 28. A total of 136 people have been screened with 18 testing positive. The Palut cluster involves the Dungun district in Terengganu and first involved a person screened after exhibiting symptoms. The patient was found to be positive on Jan 2. A total of 89 people have been screened with 10 testing positive. Noor Hisham said a total of 256 clusters are still active with 58 clusters reporting new cases today.
