Kota Kinabalu:  SAPP urged the State Government to observe a year’s moratorium before deciding on the proposed construction of the Kaiduan/Papar Dam.

Its Deputy President Edward Dagul (pic) said in a statement that all alternatives to resolve the water woes of Kota Kinabalu and surrounding areas should be considered, instead of persistently pushing for the proposed construction of the dam.

He echoed support for Senator Datuk John Ambrose’s call to look into creating more water catchments and reservoirs,

This includes also addressing other contributory factors such as maintenance and repair of the water pipes and water pumps, which would reduce the NRW (Non Revenue Water) rate, which was previously reported to be higher than 50pc.

“It does not make economic sense to procure and treat voluminous amounts of water if more than half of the water produced ends up wasted through leakages and damaged pipelines,” claimed Edward.
