Dam will be a costly solution, says ex-MP

Kota Kinabalu: The Kota Kinabalu Water Supply Phase 3 project not include building a dam as it is unnecessary, according former Kota Kinabalu MP Datuk Dr Hiew King Cheu (pic).

He said a dam would incur heavy financial and burden to the State coffer not to mention the impact and hardship caused to the “kampong” folks residing near the river which will be the source of water supply for the West Coast.

He said the Phase 3 water supply development is due to obtain water from the Papar River to supplement the water supply for Kota Kinabalu and part of the west coast.

“There are major concerns about building dams. Dams are very expensive to construct and time consuming, sometimes also expensive to maintain and dams have finite lifespan, between 50 to 100 years.
