Malaysia records highest Covid-19 daily deaths at 21, new cases 3,455, Sabah 276

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported a record high 21 deaths and 3,455 Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,661 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 173,990.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 222,628.

There are 47,847 active cases with 327 patients being treated in intensive care and 145 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 21 deaths take the toll to 791.

The new cases today involved 3,450 local infections and five imported cases.

Selangor again had the highest number of cases with 1,145, and was the only state to record four-digit infections today.

States and federal territories that recorded three-digit infections were Johor (708), Kuala Lumpur (619), Sabah (276), Sarawak (121) and Terengganu (115).

They were followed by Penang (85), Perak (84), Negeri Sembilan (79), Pahang (63), Melaka (62), Kedah (59), Kelantan (31), Putrajaya (6), Labuan (1) and Perlis (1).

There were 77 cases from prisons and detention centres, most of which came from the Tembok Taiping prison (21), Tembok Renggam (17) and Tembok Sungai Udang (15) clusters.

The 21 dead today involved 20 Malaysians and one foreigner, all aged between 36 and 83. All but one of them had existing medical conditions.

The health ministry has detected seven new Covid-19 clusters in the past 24 hours, health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said today.

In a statement, he said six of them were workplace clusters, while the other one was a community cluster.

Two clusters were detected in Selangor, with one each in Johor, Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Melaka and Perak.

The Jalan Ragum cluster is a workplace cluster involving the districts of Klang and Petaling in Selangor. Its index cases tested positive on Jan 16 after a targeted screening at a factory on Jalan Ragum, Shah Alam. Some 542 people were screened, 219 of which had tested positive.

The Bukit Rahman cluster is a workplace cluster involving the districts of Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Gombak. Its index cases tested positive on Jan 31 through a targeted screening at a factory in Taman Perindustrian, Bukit Rahman Putra, Sungai Buloh, Gombak. A total of 2,800 were screened, with 48 testing positive.

The Parit Jamil Darat cluster is a workplace cluster in Muar, Johor, where the first few cases had tested positive on Feb 1 after a targeted screening at a factory. Its name refers to Jalan Parit Jamil Darat in Parit Jawa, where the workers’ dormitory is located. So far, 189 individuals have been screened, with 26 found to be positive.

The Jalan Cheras construction site cluster is a workplace cluster detected in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Its index cases had tested positive on Feb 2 after a targeted screening at a construction site in Jalan Cheras. Of the 823 people screened, 332 tested positive.

The Semarak Bersia cluster is a community cluster in Hulu Perak, Perak. The index case tested positive on Jan 21 after a close contact screening. Its name refers to Taman Semarak and Bersia in Gerik, where most of the cases were detected. A total of 58 people were screened, 19 of whom tested positive.

The Taman Muhibbah cluster is a workplace cluster involving the districts of Temerloh and Kuantan in Pahang. The first case tested positive on Jan 27 through a symptomatic screening. This cluster involves a public administration centre in Kuantan. So far, 47 people have been screened, with 14 testing positive.

The Industri Serkam cluster is a workplace cluster involving the districts of Jasin and Melaka Tengah in Melaka. Its index cases had tested positive on Jan 25 after a targeted screening at a factory in Serkam, Merlimau. A total of 1,700 people were screened, of which 69 were found to be positive.

Four clusters have officially ended today, namely the Bukit Angkat, Bukit Semenyih construction site, Kiara construction site and Brumas clusters. There are now 404 active clusters out of the 838 reported.

Clusters that reported the most infections today were the Jalan Cheras construction site (332), Jalan Ragum (210) and Jalan Seroja (204) clusters.
