Liverpool great John Barnes has backed Martin Odegaard's move to Arsenal.
The Norway midfielder has joined to June in a straight loan from Real Madrid.
Barnes told VG: "He has had a somewhat start-stop career with all the loans, where no one has seen him since he was 15-16 years old. Now he is 22 years old, and now we want to see him for the first time."
Barnes criticised Odegaard for joining Real Madrid as a teen.
"When you are so young, you want to get the right development by playing regularly at a high level. He should have taken step by step, as the son of Alfie Haaland has done.
"I think he made a big mistake by going to Real Madrid at such a young age."
Barnes added: "He is still young and he has a great talent, so we can hope that it works out for Ødegaard at Arsenal.
"The way Arsenal play will suit him well. They like to play the ball from behind and involve the creative players. He is in the right club and with the right manager to develop."
