Malaysia registers jump in new Covid-19 cases to 3,545, alongside 12 deaths

PETALING JAYA: The health ministry has reported 3,545 Covid-19 cases and 12 deaths in the past 24 hours.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said there were 3,331 recoveries, bringing the total number of those discharged to 260,009, FMT reported.

In a statement, Noor Hisham said the total number of infections now stands at 291,774.

There are 30,677 active cases, with 189 patients being treated in intensive care and 88 requiring respiratory assistance.

Meanwhile, the 12 deaths take the number of fatalities to 1,088.

The new cases today involved 3,544 local infections and one imported case. Local cases comprised 1,544 Malaysians and 2,000 foreigners.

Negeri Sembilan detected the highest number of infections with 1,392. Of the sum, 1,338 cases were detected from the Industri Sungai Gadut cluster.

This was followed by Selangor (581), Kuala Lumpur (381), Sarawak (353), Johor (318), Perak (188), Sabah (105), Penang (95), Kelantan (53), Melaka (26), Terengganu (22), Kedah (17), Pahang (eight), Labuan (five) and Putrajaya (one).

No cases were recorded in Perlis.

A total of 29 cases were linked to prison, lock-up and detention centre clusters, with 14 from the Tembok Sungai Udang cluster.

This was followed by the Tembok Pengkalan Chepa cluster (12), Telok Mas cluster (two) and Tembok Taiping cluster (one).

The 12 who died comprised 11 Malaysians and one foreigner, with the youngest being a 52-year-old foreign man in Kuala Lumpur and the oldest a 98-year-old woman also in Kuala Lumpur.

All but four of the deceased suffered from other illnesses.
