ESPN says Rojo found out his United career was over after reading about it on social media.
Rojo read that his contract would not be extended before actually being told privately by the club.
The report also states his contract was ended by mutual consent before signing for Boca as a free agent.
United reported they had received an "undisclosed fee" for Rojo.
