SHAH ALAM, Feb 24 — The Federal government has been urged to review the country’s Technical and Vocational Education and Teaching (TVET) education system which is still lagging behind those of other countries.
Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said currently skills training goes under various ministries which hampers the efforts to produce more highly skilled workers.
“I once made a working visit to Germany and found that the country only has one direction for technical education.
“This matter is different with Malaysia when the duplication of duties involving many ministers causes the failure of the TVET education ecosystem to achieve its goals,” he said at the online forum titled ‘Post-pandemic economy: Where is the direction?’ held virtually last night.
The Selangor government implemented the Smart Selangor Technical and Professional Skills Initiative (Iktisass) to produce a disciplined and competitive workforce.
The programme is part of the 2021 Selangor Budget to train participants to meet the industry needs and explore new job opportunities that meet international standards.
The comprehensive initiative is made through the involvement of the Selangor Technical Skills Development Center (STDC) to complement the TVET ecosystem.
