KUALA LANGAT, March 2 — A fine of up to RM500,000 can be imposed on individuals who commit open burning, especially in forest reserves.

State executive councillor for environment Hee Loy Sian said the penalty according to the Act under the Department of the Environment also provides for a maximum jail term of five years for the offence.

Hee explained that the Selangor Forestry Department could also impose a fine of RM50,000 and imprisonment of not more than five years for the irresponsible act.

“Therefore, residents near the forest reserve area are reminded not to do the activity or they will be severely punished,” he said after inspecting a forest fire here.

He also urged the public to lodge complaints if they see suspicious activities as well as to identify agricultural methods that do not affect the environment.
