Jailed, fined over careless driving

TAWAU: A 64-year-old unemployed man was jailed two years and fined RM5,000 or another three months for causing the death of a man along Jalan Merotai/Bombalai, here, due to careless driving at 12.20pm on Sept 16, 2019.

Muhammad Larassa (pic), pleaded guilty before the Magistrate Amir Shah Amir Hassan to the charge under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987 which carries a jail term of between two years and 10 years and fine of not more than RM20,000. 

His driving licence was also ordered to be suspended for three years. The court was told that Muhammad was driving a Perodua Kancil from Kalabakan and heading towards Merotai Besar. 

At the junction of Pasaraya Mini Ekazuma, Muhammad made a left turn into the junction but collided with a motorcycle from the opposite lane, resulting in the passenger, Efren Arojado Dizon, 46, who was sitting at the front seat of the Kancil sustaining serious injuries and died at the scene while the rider also sustained serious injuries.
