Kai Havertz shined as a false nine as Chelsea claimed a 2-0 win over Everton to strengthen their top-four chances.

Germany international Havertz has struggled to meet expectations since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

But new manager Thomas Tuchel may have found the perfect position for £70m signing.

Leading the attack as a false nine, Havertz broke the deadlock in the first-half when his shot deflected off Ben Godfrey from an own goal.

The 21-year-old then had a close-range volley disallowed for a handball in the build-up.

The hosts doubled their lead in the second-half when Havertz was brought down Jordan Pickford.

Jorginho stepped up to convert the spot-kick, maintaining Tuchel's 11 unbeaten streak since taking over from Frank Lampard in January 19.

This victory takes the fourth-placed Blues four points clear of Everton.

Speaking after the game, Tuchel said: "We deserved to win. It was a very difficult first half but we controlled it completely. Second half we increased our level and had a lot of dangerous attacks.

"Very pleased with Kai. It was the trust we gave him and he used the trust we gave him. He is a player who has all the ability to be a dominant figure in [attack] and he stepped up.

"You see the quality of the players and the club. It is a pleasure to be on the sideline and work with the team. Everybody in the club is doing everything to compete at this level."
