Tottenham great Glenn Hoddle has lifted the lid on finding himself in the middle of last week's aftermath of their Europa League elimination at Dinamo Zagreb.
Spurs blew a 2-0 lead to lose 3-0 in Croatia in the second-leg and so bundled out of the tournament at the round of 16 stage. It was a performance that Hoddle, in his role as pundit, described as "disastrous" and "diabolical" - words which were put to Spurs manager Jose Mourinho immediately in the post-match presser.
For Hoddle, while standing by his words, it was unfair to use his reaction to confront Mourinho with after the game. Indeed, the former Tottenham manager says he "had words" with the broadcaster for putting his comments to Mourinho, which he insists was never intended as an attack on the Portuguese.
On Mourinho's response, Hoddle insisted on his podcast ' The Glenn Hoddle Footy Show': "No, no I think he was put under pressure, if I'm honest. I think that was wrong. What I said in the studio, I meant it. It was diabolical for that one performance.
"Afterwards it was the wrong questions to ask the manager. It wasn't fair to ask him that and use me as a buffer in that way from the studio. I've had words with the people who said that. End of story.
"For Jose, I have 120 per cent respect for him. What he's done in football is quite incredible. Where he excels more than anyone is that he's done it in so many different countries.
"To do it in Spain, Italy, England and Portugal. It's quite incredible what he's done so I will always have that respect for him because I've been in those shoes and it's so, so hard to get a little success, let alone what he's got.
"That's why I think Tottenham were right to get him to the club because he's been a serial trophy winner."
On the game in Zagreb, Hoddle admits he was upset with the attitude on display, insisting that complacency simply led to the players failing to click into action as the goals rained in.
Hoddle stands by his reaction. He continued: "The reasons I said it was disastrous for the club and a diabolical performance was because that game in the first-leg, Spurs completely controlled.
"So no disrespect to Zagreb, they're not a great team.
"But it was so disappointing with the complacency that the players played with. I just could not believe they looked like they thought they were already through.
"In a game of football you cannot turn it on like a switch. You can't say 'oh well, we've lost a goal, we're 2-1 up still, let's turn it on now', it doesn't happen.
"You can't do that in professional football, it will kick you up the backside and that's how I felt. Spurs actually didn't kick it any other gear. And that's why it was so disappointing."
