SHAH ALAM, March 17 — The Federal government has been urged to allow interstate travels unless there is sufficient data linking the Covid-19 outbreaks with movement across states, Sinar Harian reported today.

Selangor Task Force for Covid-19 chairman Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the previous surge in coronavirus cases had been due to several situations, such as the infection striking high-population density centres, including, prisons, detention centres and workers’ hostels.

“The spike in the number of cases was due to the lack of social distancing, noncompliance of the standard operating procedures (SOP) at workplaces, hostels, and detention centres.

“I would like to stress that there had not been an obvious sudden upsurge in infections due to movement between states,” Dzulkefly told Sinar Harian in an interview on Tuesday, adding that returning to hometowns at any period of time was not the main issue of the spike in Covid-19 cases.

The former Health Minister had also posed suggestions that could be taken into consideration by the Federal government, which include conducting mass Covid-19 screening operations using the rapid antigen test kit (RTK-Ag).

“Focus should also be given on SOP compliance in high-risk areas as well as increasing health awareness.

“Public awareness should also focus on how the vaccine is one of the components to fight the pandemic but is not the final solution until the 80 per cent target to have the population vaccinated is met,” he added.
