SHAH ALAM, March 10 — Parking payments made through the Smart Selangor Parking (SSP) application helped save 634,994 kilograms of paper, said state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han.
He said the savings were calculated based on the number of users registered with the digital parking payment system which now exceeded 1.5 million since its launch in July 2018.
“For the record in the last two to three years, the response to the application is very encouraging and (it) even has the largest number of users compared to other (similar) applications in Malaysia.
“Apart from facilitating users, we believe efforts to reduce the use of paper can be achieved if more people switch to digital payments,” he said.
He said this at a press conference after chairing a meeting on the direction for the management of Selangor local authorities’ (PBT) parking lots at Wisma MBSA (Shah Alam City Council) here yesterday.
In a discussion with mayors and presidents of municipals councils, the state government agreed that the use of parking coupons or manual payment will end on December 31 this year.
Digital parking payment through the application developed by Smart Selangor Delivery Unit (SSDU) will be fully enforced from January 1 next year.
The smart parking system is widely used by the state’s local authorities and Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
