IPOH, April 21 — Six students of Perak Matriculation College who were compounded RM1,500 for not wearing a face mask two days ago have had their compounds reduced on appeal, said Perak Health director Datuk Dr Ding Lay Ming.

She said a meeting was held with the college management and students at a nearby District Health Office yesterday, during which the students submitted their appeals and a lower compound was issued based on existing procedures.

“However, the college management made an appeal for a further reduction on grounds that the students cannot afford to pay the amount of compound imposed,” she said in a statement today.

Dr Ling said an investigation paper on the appeal for a further reduction was being prepared for consideration by the Health Ministry (MOH).

She said the college was given a stern warning for not ensuring compliance with the standard operating procedure to curb Covid-19 at its premises.

It was reported that the students were penalised for not wearing a face mask and not practising social distancing in the college cafeteria at 3.45pm.
